Have you dreamt about becoming a “REAL” Model, where this is your “CAREER”, this is what you do for “LIFE”. One of the things you must realize, is NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE…. but you must put in the work.
Lots of Models think that once they are signed that they are the NEXT SUPERMODEL…. it’s more to staying on top than just walking a runway…. A “REAL” Model’s job is to SELL THE GARMENT….. this is how and when Models get PAID…. WHEN THEY CAN SELL….
Contrary to popular TV Shows….. it’s not how far you can BEND BACK, or SPIN, or SHAKE on the Cat Walk, it’s SELLING THE GARMENT…. That is when you are a “REAL” Model and that takes SKILL.
You will hear a lot of models say, “I CAN WALK” but that is just the beginning….. You have to know how to “SELL” your Brand to an “AGENT or BOOKER” because that is how you get paying work. You have to be able to walk into a room full of agents, with 5,500 models trying for the same job, and convince that agent that you’re the “ONLY” one for the job. They really don’t care how far you can bend back (LOL)
Most don’t feel like they need any type of training, WOW… you just pop out knowing everything? If you were going to be a Doctor you would have to train/get educated, same with a Secretary, Lawyer, Ballerina, etc., the point is, you may be a very good candidate to be a model, but if you don’t know how to conduct yourself at “PROFESSIONAL” auditions, or don’t know your measurements, don’t have update photos, etc., how do you expect them to give you a modeling job? It’s like going for a job as a Secretary and you can’t type…..
Can you get modeling jobs without training…. OF COURSE YOU CAN, but “MOST PAYING ASSIGNMENTS” don’t work with Models that are not signed with an Agency, have a Model Management or Booker. Why, because most of the time when you have these things, you are “TRAINED” so you know how to Sell The Brand.
Also I need to clear up a misconception that says “MODELS DON’T HAVE TO PAY WHEN SIGNING WITH AN AGENCY”. Let me explain how it works; if an Agency signs you, most of the time it may be a 3-6month contract. During this time, the Agency will “INVEST” in the Model, because they “BELIEVE” the Model can get paying work. After sending the Model out on numerous “GO SEES”, if that Model does not “BOOK” a job within the 6 month contact, the Agency may drop the model and the MODEL WILL OWE THE AGENCY MONEY for all of the money they invested in the model. So the Model LEAVES THE AGENCY “OWING” THEM. Also understand, if you do book a job, $100,000, you may get $15,000 after the agency takes “ALL OF THEIR CUTS” Agency Commission, Booker Commission, Administrative Services, Magazine Services, Telephone calls on your behalf, Fixing your teeth, getting you in shape (Gym Membership), Transportation (all those Ubers), Hotels (for the Go Sees in Paris), Airline tickets (you want to upgrade to 1st Class, SURE…. just remember, you’re PAYING FOR IT). I know most of you are CLUTCHING YOUR PEARLS right about now, but please go on YouTube and search for Modeling Agency Experiences, and you will find numerous stories from “REAL, SIGNED” Models that owed the Agency once they released from their contract. You can view all of the things that go on in the “REAL MODELING WORLD”, so you have a better understanding and appreciation for the Agencies, Model Managements, etc.
Bottom Line…. Don’t be afraid to invest in yourself. If you have been running around the modeling circuit and not getting where you want to go, then you need to try something different. Find out where you fit in as a Model, are you runway, print, editorial, products, parts model, etc., Train so you can get the paying jobs, continue to level up, so you can have a career as a “REAL” Model.
