FASHION ROUNDUP – THE BEST FASHION WEEK SHOWS

As always, Fashion Avenue News is on the hunt for the “BEST OF THE BEST” when it comes to fashion. Here are some of Editor-in-Chief, Sofia Davis favorite shows, designers and models.

SHOWS:

ATLANTIC CITY FASHION WEEK

Atlantic City Fashion Week is one of the BEST fashion week shows to attend, why? It starts and finishes on time, each season they have designers from across the globe and each designers has a new collection – this is a requirement for returning designers, a new collection each season. If you are a designer looking to show your collection, I strongly encourage you to consider Atlantic City Fashion Week. Most designers SELL their garment and they do a mass amount of Press/Media/Marketing. The producers, Power Couple Lamont & Jeana Bowling, produce the show at the Show Boat Hotel. At the Show Boat, you can network with other designers and models, enjoy a relaxing experience and show your collection in a great space. They have Model monitors backstage to help if you need, a award winning beauty & media team, all together it’s a great experience. Visit their site to get more info: http://www.AtlanticCityFashionWeek.com or on line @AtlanticCityFashionWeek.

TIMES SQUARE – THE FASHION WEEK EXPERIENCE

The Fashion Week Experience is produced by Mega Producer James Corbett in the Heart of the World…. Times Square. Now it’s already challenging to produce a show outdoors, but in the Times Square, you have to be a Magician…. James if just that…

The FW Experience went off without a hitch, it started on time with The House of Sofia setting the tone with a Couture line up and models from Disrupt Modeling Agency, CEO Nina Nesbitt. The entire show was fabulous, with designers coming from far and near. James likes to add a little entertainment to the mix and had amazing music industry talent grace the runway in between collections. The crowd never thinned, it stayed packed throughout the entire show. He also had an large amount of Press/Media covering the event.

I must admit, I was nervous when asked to do the show, I’m trying to figure out how this would all be accomplished with so many people (300K cross Times Square), but it went smooth and all of the designers and attendees seemed pleased with the event. If you are looking for a show to attend or participate in, consider The FW Experience, take a look https://www.thefashionweekexperience.com/

HARLEM FASHION WEEK

I absolutely LOVE HFW, the Mother & Daughter team is fabulous. I have known this Dynamic Duo when HFW was just a Dream and to see what they have done with that Dream, I am so proud of them for creating a much needed event that recognizes independent fashion industry talent where it is BORN, in HARLEM. If you want to experience the creativity of independent fashion industry talent, get a ticket to Harlem Fashion Week. HFW, keep up the good work! https://www.harlemfw.com

Harlem Fashion Week held their NYFW show in the heart of Harlem. Coming down 125th street you could see the white tents towering in the ACP Courtyard of The Harlem State Office Building. Harlem Fashion Week Executive team pulled off a phenomenal production in order to accommodate its attendees during an impromptu COVID-19 regulation mandate by NYC, they took their show outside and it became a celebration of the fashion culture of Harlem.

The evening began with the Black Lives Matter Fashion Exhibition and Awards Ceremony, with host Jonathan Bodrick and award presenter and media fashion mogul Bevy Smith. HFW surprised Bevy with a Cultural Icon award, it was a magical moment. The ceremony also acknowledged Nikoa Evans, Chivona Newsome, and Dionne Williams who were awarded the Cultural Icon Award. The community of Harlem joined the celebration as neighbors, store owners and shopping pedestrians stopped to watch and understood that this was “A Celebration of Black Culture in Fashion”. One of the special honorees Chivona Renee Newsome of BLM, Greater New York Chapter was well worth the awards as she continues to fight for social justice, equality and reminding individuals that Black Lives Matter! The Gucci Man himself, Dapper Dan caught wind of the show and made a special appearance as he strolled the event to show his love and support. Inculpating all this wasn’t easy but it all was worth the dedication to the culture by Harlem Fashion Week. The evening continued with 3 fashion showcases including the emerging designer exhibition, judged by Janet Rodriguez, Owner and CEO of SoHarlem, Bre Scullark motivational speak, actress and America’s Next Top Model finalist, Jennifer Cunningham Award Winning Journalist, Editor and Photographer, Jay Blessed Award Winning Writer, Media Personality, and Fashion Designer Edwing D’Angelo. This year’s winner was Mario Miguelito, with his collection entitled “Void Asylum”. Whether it was sunny, rainy or both, the show continued as the designers found space and time to present their 2021 Fall collections. Each showed strong visions that truly asserted their rightful place in Harlem Fashion Week Runway Season 9 (Press Release courtesy of HFW)

Harlem Fashion Week (Harlem FW), Established in 2016 by the founders with roots in Harlem, powerhouse mother-daughter team of Tandra Birkett and Yvonne Jewnell, owners of the fashion design company Yvonne Jewnell New York LLC. HARLEM FASHION ROW

HFR is an amazing platform for independent and established fashion industry talent. Their entire purpose is to push the designer to the next level. With professional style models and the ability to make it work, CEO Brandice Daniel has created a fashion paradise that includes, not just showing your collection, but workshops, field trips, and fashion getaways where you learn how to maneuver in the fashion industry. These types of getaways, etc., are extremely valuable to designers as most know how to design, but may not know how to produce line sheets, get garments manufactured, attract the attention of a buyer, navigate IG for sales promotions, and more, you can learn a lot from HFR

“Sometimes you find your purpose, and other times your purpose finds you.”

Harlem’s Fashion Row (HFR) is the premier agency creating a bridge between brands and designers of
color in fashion through brand strategy, collaborations, new media, experiential marketing, recruiting, and pipeline programs.

Long before inclusivity became a widely accepted goal across the fashion industry, Harlem’s Fashion Row has been championing and uplifting designers of color.

We cultivate innovative events which attract a multitude of diverse influencers in fashion, media, and entertainment. Our objective is to provide real business opportunities to multicultural designers in fashion to showcase their skills and abilities in an industry that is often non-accessible to this group.

Harlem’s Fashion Row has partnered with Target, Marriott International, Verizon, Prudential, Covergirl, Pandora jewelry, Nissan, Macy’s, Dark & Lovely, Coca-Cola, ESSENCE Magazine, AOL, BET, and more.

Founder/ CEO Brandice Daniel

“Every day, I’m speaking to designers and listening to what they need. HFR is a work in progress. We don’t have all of the answers, but we are constantly in search of solutions. We will be satisfied when designers of color can create profitable businesses from doing what they love when we’ve convinced you to shop from these designers. We’ve created a system that allows access to any talented designer of color to thrive despite their socioeconomic status. We’re a work in progress. You’re welcome to come along for this incredible ride!” – Brandice Daniel (info courtesy of HFR website https://www.harlemsfashionrow.com)

EDITOR IN CHIEF SOFIA DAVIS says: I am so proud of these producers, as most people don’t understand, producing a FW show, season after season is NOT easy. It can be extremely stressful with everyone wanting a piece of you, trying to find sponsors and navigating designers, models, event spaces and more. If you have an interest in fashion or just want to help great organizations, contact them, volunteer your time, promote their post, buy a ticket, in fact, get your friends together and go and support them with group tickets, take a class with them. All of these items help to keep the organizations going. When we don’t see items in our community we complain, stop complaining and start doing….

DISRUPT MODELING AGENCY – THE NEW “IT GIRL”

I attend a lot of fashion week shows and feel the models do a great job, sometimes there is one model that seems to have it all. I met Model Lauryn Mitchell, who is signed with Disrupt Modeling Agency, during NY FW. Disrupt Modeling Agency was providing Models for The NY FW Experience. Lauryn was so professional and well poise. I had not see this much sophistication since Naomi Campbell ruled the runway, so I renamed her, “the new NAOMI”. She breathed life into the garments and knew exactly how to display them. She was magical, she is the new “IT GIRL” (definition of “It Girl” – An “It Girl” is an attractive young woman, generally a celebrity/model, who is perceived to have both sex appeal and a personality that is especially engaging. The expression It Girl originated in British upper-class society around the turn of the 20th century). Look for this fabulous SuperModel in the upcoming issue of Fashion Avenue News magazine. P.S. Need models for a fashion show or campaign? contact Nina Nesbitt of Disrupt Modeling Agency at https://www.industrydirectmodels.com/international-models-and-talent-assoc
