For optimum smoothness, exfoliation is a key player in creating the perfect base for your tan. It’s important to focus on tough areas like elbows and knees, but don’t forget the rest. And when we say head to toe, we mean head to toe!
- Exfoliating cleanser
- Loofah, body brush or exfoliating gloves
- Pumice stone
Before stepping into the shower, brush your dry skin with your loofah, body brush or exfoliating gloves. This will help remove the loose skin and prepare your skin for the exfoliating process. Begin with the soles of your feet, working your way up your body.
Use a pumice stone on your feet to eliminate rough spots and calluses. Apply your exfoliating cleanser to your loofah or gloves. Begin scrubbing your body in a circular motion starting with the bottoms of your feet and working your way up. When you reach the bikini area, don’t scrub too hard because the skin is very sensitive. Use a body brush to exfoliate your back and other hard-to-reach places.
Be gentle on your face, particularly around your eyes and mouth. Use an exfoliating product especially formulated for the face, which is gentler than products designed to be used on the body. Don’t forget about your hands. You want them to look and feel soft and smooth too!
Water works- Rinse your body with lukewarm water, and follow with the coldest water you can stand. It will shrink your pores and reduce the chance of them getting blocked.
Hydrate areas that tend to soak up a lot of color- palms, knuckles, cuticles and feet are common dry spots. Oil-free and lightweight moisturisers work best! Make sure that you moisturise every day to maintain you’re your tan!
Let’s get tanning
A mitt is a must! Avoid streaks by pumping your product onto the mitt and apply to the skin using sweeping motions, rather than circular motions – remember you want to evenly distribute the product.
Started from the bottom- Start at your ankles and work your way up for the best result.
Back it up! Flip the mitt back to front, you’ll find it easier to apply or use a self-tan spray with 360° technology meaning it will spray at whatever angle you put it at. Double up: Don’t worry if you go over the same area twice-the tan will only be patchy if you miss a bit.
Three tan faux-pas:
- Never rub in your tanning product! Gentle smoothing is best for an even finish:
- Use sanitizer or wipes instead of washing your hands to avoid them washing off in development time.
- Avoid tight fitting clothing to avoid patches and caramel chunks on your favourite t-shirt.
You should change your game tactics here, as your face is more prone to breakouts. Try mixing a small amount of tan with some moisturiser to soften the formula, and use the mitt to gently apply it to the face.
